Secularism and Individualism
By Promoting trade and the arts guilds help them become as popular as religion. In some cities, such as Venice and Genoa, merchant guilds governed the town, promoting and protecting trade. In cities governed by guilds no other guilds were needed for trade. Through guilds merchants became very wealthy showing individualism. Guilds governing towns would use the Doge to collect the products that guilds produced. Wealthy merchants attained their money from raising needs for products. In the 1200s business was blooming and merchants helped provide for difficult times. Some guilds became monopolies.
